Holiday adventures to Jordan

Follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia and discover the magic of Jordan. From the hidden city of Petra to the tranquillity of the Dead Sea, this is a country that’s as beautiful as it is ancient. Embark on an adventure here and you’ll tour centuries-old rock cities, experience the emptiness of the desert, feast on Middle Eastern mezze and gaze up at star-filled skies.

The capital, Amman, and its surrounds are a whirlwind of classical temples, Greco-Roman ruins and desert castles, while the resorts bordering the Dead Sea are spot on for relaxation and rejuvenation. The Wadi Rum desert is a sweeping landscape of desert dunes and incredible rock formations, with Bedouin camps offering a glimpse into nomadic life here.

The headline act on our Jordan holidays is always Petra, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. This Nabatean city is an amazing feat of architecture, with temples, houses and the famous Treasury all expertly hewn out of the rose-red rock.

Known as the Rose Red City, Petra dates back to 300 BC and is Jordan’s most treasured attraction and probably the most famous archaeological site in the world. Hidden in a canyon between sandstone cliffs, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with narrow passageways, tombs and temples to discover.

Wadi Rum, in the south of Jordan, is a protected desert wilderness offering breathtaking views of beautiful sandstone rock formations. You can see prehistoric inscriptions and carvings lining the rocky caverns and steep chasms.

Bethany is said to be the baptismal site of Jesus Christ. Located on the east bank of the Jordan River, guided tours here will show you around this holy site, known locally as El-Maghtas. You can tour the baptism pools and ancient ruins as well as the Lower Basilica.

The Dead Sea is at salt-lake situated at 400m below sea level – the lowest altitude on earth. Its high salt content gives a buoyancy that allows swimmers to float effortlessly, while the mineral-rich mud is the perfect natural face mask. Scoop up a handful, smear it on your cheeks, then lie back and relax…

The climate in Jordan is semi-arid. It shares some of the humid, subtropical climate of the Mediterranean and the hot dry climate of the Arabian desert. Jordan enjoys long, hot summers and short, cool winters. The days are warm, but by night the temperature can drop below zero. The best time to visit Jordan is between March and May.

Flight time from the UK to Amman is just over five hours.

Jordan is three hours ahead of GMT.

The official language of Jordan is Arabic. The second most spoken language is English. There is a number of Arab dialects widely spoken across the country.

Visas are required for British Citizens, which can be obtained at the airport on arrival (our tours to Jordan usually include this – please check itineraries for details). Visit GOV UK or CIBT Visas for more advice on passports and visas.
