Our History

Operating for more than 58 years, Country Cousins is the longest established introductory live-in care agency in the UK.

What began as ‘Country Cousins and Emergency Mothers’ in the spare room of Josephine McGregor’s house in 1959, has grown from a modest local enterprise into one of the nation’s leading introductory live-in care agencies

Today, we provide self-employed, live-in carers nationwide to more than 500 clients every week, offering compassionate and professional companion care for the elderly, those convalescing in their own home, and disabled adults who need extra support to live independently.

We're always fully focused on providing the best quality homecare services at all times, and stand resolutely by our uncompromising focus on quality.

We promise to:

  • Allow our clients to retain their dignity and independence by living in their own homes, supported by competent, caring and compatible Cousins for as long as they and their families wish.
  • Offer clients a good choice and continuity of appropriately skilled Cousins, matching their requirements as closely and as quickly as possible.
  • Provide tailored care at home for dementia patients and other illnesses that require specialist care.
  • Be flexible to our clients’ circumstances, their needs and current home life. Our carers do all they can to make the start of a new era as painless as possible.
  • Ensure a smooth service through effective and timely administrative processes.

Country Cousins provide clients with viable choices – the choice to remain in their own home; and the choice to continue to live their life in the company of a carefully selected Country Cousin.

Our Founder

Back in 1959 before The Beatles became a band, an enterprising lady called Josephine McGregor decided to start a small business from her house in West Sussex to provide care and assistance for local folk in their own homes.

She was already experienced in caring for people, having served as a Royal Navy Nursing Sister in this country and in France during WW2. So, she borrowed £50 from her husband to pay for an ad in The Lady… and the rest is Country Cousins.

  • A great blessing to us

On behalf of my brother and myself, and indeed all our family, I should like to record the debt we owe the Country Cousins who came to care for both our parents over the past 2 years. Without the help of Country Cousins, Mum and Dad could not have stayed in their own home and this they so dearly wished to do, it was a great blessing to us all that this became a reality.

  • Very professional and extremely caring

I would like to say that the Country Cousins, who cared for my wife until she died, were very professional and extremely caring and kind during the time they were here. I would like to say thank you, at Country Cousins, for sending them in our time of need.

  • Enjoyed Country Cousins support

I have now enjoyed the support of your Country Cousins and I would like you to know that of 6 1/2 years of having to need care, these two ladies, though very different in character, they are both splendid carers in their own way.

  • You never let us down

Thank you to you all at Country Cousins for the support you have given us over the last four years. You have never let us down over the years, we have met some interesting and caring people. We have no hesitation in recommending you to other people.

  • Very pleased and happy in her care

Can you kindly note that I was very happy with the Country Cousin who came to look after my mother and she was very happy in her care too. Very reassuring to know that she was in the capable hands of someone you could trust.
