| Call barring |
A feature that allows you to stop outgoing calls. Saga offers this service free of charge.

| CPS - Carrier Pre Select |
This facility allows you to opt for your calls to be routed through a specific carrier chosen by you and with whom you have a contract, for example Saga. You do not have to dial a prefix, use a dialler box or do anything different from usual for the call to be routed through this facility.

| Directory enquiries |
There are a number of directory enquiry services that can give you the telephone number for a specific name and address. Their numbers are always 6 digits long, and start with 118 - for example, 118 099. Charges to the different 118 services may vary considerably.

| ECN |
Economy - Saga’s evening call rate, from 6pm - 8am Monday to Friday.
|
| Fixed fee |
A standing charge which includes all calls of a specific type.
|
| Fixed line |
Any telephone (cordless or wireless) that operates over a standard telephone line, i.e. it is not a mobile. Also referred to as 'landline'.

| Flat rate fee |
A standing charge which includes all calls of a specific type.
|
| Freephone |
Calls to numbers starting 0800, 0500 or 0808 are free from a landline telephone. Some mobile phone networks may charge to call freephone numbers.

| ICSTIS |
The Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services. This is the regulatory body for all premium rate telecommunications services and will investigate any disputes involving premium rate numbers.

| International |
A call to a country outside the UK. It will be prefixed with 00.
|
| Landline |
Any telephone (cordless or wireless) that operates over a standard telephone line, i.e. it is not a mobile. Also referred to as 'fixed line'.

1471 Last caller number service |
Call this service to find out the number of the last call to you. The cost for this service varies between operators, but is free to customers of the Saga Telephone Service. Please note that, although there is no charge to use the 1471 service for retrieving a number, if you choose to connect direct to the caller by following the prompt you will be given (i.e.to press '3'), you will be charged for the subsequent call. BT will charge you 6p if you press 3, regardless of whether your call is connected.

| Local |
A landline number beginning with 01 or 02, which is either in the same area code as your own telephone number, or in a surrounding code area.

| Mobile networks |
O2, Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Three. All mobile numbers in the UK currently begin with the numbers 07.

| National |
A landline number beginning 01 or 02 which is not in the same area code as your own telephone number, and not in a surrounding code area.
|
| Non-geographic numbers |
These are numbers that are used to identify a type of service rather than a geographical location, e.g. 0845, 0870, 0800, 0890. Charges to the different non-geographic codes vary considerably.

141 Number withheld service |
Prefix the number you are dialling with 141 to prevent your number from being retrieved through 1471. This service is free.

Office of Communications. The regulator for the communications industries, created by the Communications Act 2003.

| OTELO |
Office of Telecommunications Ombudsman. This offers a free and independent service to resolve disagreements between customers and their service provider.

| Patient number |
Calls to hospital wards.
|
| Premium rate numbers |
Numbers usually reserved for accessing specialist information or services, for example to enter a competition. These numbers are charged at a special (higher) rate, which can be up to £1.50 per minute, and begin with 09.

| Set-Up Fee |
A charge that is applied to every non-Local and non-National call, i.e. numbers not beginning 01 or 02, at the beginning of every call
|
| STD |
Saga's standard call rate, from 8am - 6pm Monday to Friday.
|
| Talk time |
The length of time a phone line can be used to engage in a conversation. Usually stated in minutes.
|
| Tariff |
The set of charges that apply depending on which price plan you have chosen (i.e. Saga Standard, Hourtime or Anytime).

| vISP |
Virtual internet service provider.
|
1571 Voicemail |
Saga's telephone service uses BT's 1571 service to provide an automated answerphone facility to callers if you do not answer within a number of rings, either because you are out or your phone number is engaged. This service enables your caller to record and leave a message, and then alerts you that a new message has been left. Accessing your messages from your own phone by dialling 1571 is free, but there is a charge if you connect to the service away from home.
