Saga Respite for Carers Trust

At this time of year most of us are looking forward to the summer and thinking about booking a well-deserved holiday. However, taking a holiday is not an option for a growing number of people in Britain

Some four million people over 50 care for a relative or partner, many seven days a week. Hundreds of thousands of these carers simply never get a break. A recent Saga/Populus poll revealed that almost nine in 10 carers - 87% - said lack of time to themselves was having a major impact on their lives.

National Carers' Week, from June 9, will aim to highlight their contribution and help campaign for better support for carers.

Of course looking after relatives and friends is a task people do for love and out of duty - but it can be exhausting. This vast army of unpaid carers has been estimated to save the country £87 billion a year - but who is caring for them?

We are launching the Saga Respite For Carers Trust which, as well as campaigning for better conditions for carers, will give some of these deserving people a much-needed break.

Full details will follow, but in short we will be asking you to tell us about your life as a carer, or to nominate deserving others. It's a unique idea which Saga hopes will make a very real difference to the lives of the carers chosen.

Keep an eye on www.saga.co.uk and www.saga.co.uk/health/carers/ for the latest progress on the Trust and how to participate.

Click here for details of how to nominate someone. The progress of this initiative will be posted in our carers section online and on Saga Zone. Please register on Saga Zone to read and/or take part in the carers discussion.
