Bags under the eyes

Fed up of people asking if you’re tired? Lisa Kjellsson finds out if the beauty industry can do anything for you, with the help of Dr Tamara Griffiths, Consultant Dermatologist and founding member of the British Cosmetic Dermatology Group
Skin Doctors Cosmeceuticals Instant Eyelift
What the blurb says: Minimizes the appearance of bags, puffiness and wrinkles around the eyes. This temporary eye-lifting serum painlessly smoothes away the signs of ageing in just 1-2 minutes, and results last up to eight hours.
How it’s supposed to work: A combination of antioxidants and Serum Albumin firms and tightens the skin and Hyaluronic Acid moisturises and helps to increase production of collagen and elastin, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
The dermatologist’s comment: “Antioxidants may add protection against the sun's damaging rays, but concentration and absorption can vary. Hyaluronic Acid acts as a humectant and draws water into the skin”
Price: 10 ml £19.95. Available from larger Boots stores, plus salons and pharmacies nationwide or by mail order. For stockists, call 0845 408 2998 or visit www.skindoctors.co.uk
Dr Nick Lowe Age Protect Eye Serum
What the blurb says: Instantly firms, tones and moisturises the delicate skin under the eyes, whilst helping to effectively fight the appearance of dark circles and fine lines.
How it’s supposed to work: Targets blood-originated pigments responsible for dark circles, as well as local inflammation using a combination of advanced peptide technology and Niacinamide, along with the Anti Age Cranley Complex (pomegranate and raspberry for anti-oxidant activity, Ferulic Acid to protect against UV damage and Vitamins A, C and E encapsulated in liposomes to maximise skin absorption).
The dermatologist’s comment: “Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory effects and may reduce redness. Antioxidants such as vitamin C will add protection against the sun's damaging rays, and is stabilized with the addition of ferulic acid. Liposome encapsulation will enhance penetration into the skin.”
Price: 15 ml £16.95. Available at larger Boots stores. For stockists, call 08450 70 80 90.
Matis Réponse Corrective Wrinkle Eraser
What the blurb says: A hyper-targeted correcting touch-up brush that specifically targets crow’s feet around the eyes and deeper frown lines. Expression lines are reduced dramatically and eyes regain their sparkle.
How it’s supposed to work: The muscle-relaxing active ingredient M2R has been scientifically proven and is a peptide (combination of amino acids). Muscle contraction is reduced 10 minutes after application. The skin is less creased and the depth of expression lines is visibly reduced.
The dermatologist’s comment: Certain amino-acids have been shown to diminish muscle cell contraction in the laboratory setting, but proper clinical trials for these agents applied in a cream onto facial skin are lacking.
Price: 2.5 ml £30. Available from leading salons and spas nationwide and by mail order. For stockists, call 01322 290 101 or visit www.matis-uk.com.
