A plumper pout

Lips

The bee-stung lips of youth inevitably thin as we get older, but short of a collagen injection, is there anything we can do about it? Lisa Kjellsson investigates the beauty products that promise a quick fix with the help of Dr Tamara Griffiths, Consultant Dermatologist and founding member of the British Cosmetic Dermatology Group

Skin Doctors Cosmeceuticals Perfect Pout

What the blurb says: Enjoy sexy bee stung lips without collagen. Gives results that are almost comparable to cosmetic surgery without the pain or expense.

How it's supposed to work: The penetrating lip serum contains L-arginine which allows blood to engorge the lips so they appear to swell. Also contains Palmitate to stimulate the lips' natural production of collagen, which improves their moisture, condition and contour whilst giving them a glossy sheen. Works in about 60 seconds or less and results last for hours.

The dermatologist’s comment: Some evidence exists to suggest some peptides may stimulate collagen production, but further research is needed.

Price: 8ml £19.95. Available from larger Boots stores, plus salons and pharmacies nationwide and by mail order. For stockists, call 0845 408 2998 or visit www.skindoctors.co.uk

Matis Réponse Corrective Smoothing Lip Contour Care

What the blurb says: Designed for the delicate skin around the lips. Fills out lines and plumps lips to reveal a youthful mouth. Ideal for completely targeted application on the go.

How it’s supposed to work: Micro-pearls made from hyaluronic acid restore volume to the upper layers of the epidermis and swell in the skin. The myorelaxing active ingredient M2R makes the skin look less creased and expression lines are visibly reduced.

The dermatologist’s comment: Hyaluronic acid acts to attract water to the top layer of the skin so will diminish dryness, and the rough, flaky appearance associated with it.

Price: £23. Available from leading salons and spas nationwide and by mail order. For stockists, call 01322 290 101 or visit www.matis-uk.com.
