Wanted: patients taking Aricept
A new trial of drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease is looking for volunteers
Research and clinical trials are essential to the development of new treatments for Alzheimer's, a complex disease for which there are limited treatment options, and which often requires a combination of therapies to maximize clinical benefit. Now patients in the UK have the opportunity to be a part of this important process.
Study centres in England and Scotland are currently enrolling patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease in a late-stage clinical trial, known as the CONCERT study. It is designed to test the potential increased benefits of giving the investigational drug, dimebon (latrepirdine), for patients already taking Aricept (donepezil HCl tablets), the leading Alzheimer's medication worldwide.
While a cure is still many years away, treatments that provide lasting effects, more complete symptomatic benefits or that can slow disease progression would be meaningful advances for patients and caregivers; indicating an urgent need for patients to participate in clinical trials to help advance the understanding of how Alzheimer's disease can be better treated.
