Apple juice
New research, published in the American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias, has found that a couple of glasses of apple juice every day can improve the behavioural symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, US, gave institutionalised Alzheimer’s patients two 120ml glasses of apple juice every day for a month.
Although there were no reported changes in symptoms related to day-to-day abilities, such as feeding or dressing oneself, behavioural and psychotic symptoms improved by as much as 27 percent. These symptoms often include anxious state of mind, feeling agitated or being delusional. Such symptoms – perhaps even more than the physical – can make the caregiver’s job distressing, especially if the caregiver is a family member.
