April 29, 2011: A few thoughts on inch loss

By Judith Wills , Friday 29 April 2011

Alphabet N No-one will be reading this today as we will all be watching TV and drinking Champagne. That's fine, so I can keep my thoughts on inch loss in private

So far mine is thus:

1½ off bust

2 in off waist

3 in off belly

1 in off hips

That doesn’t sound all that much. But if I were to go to one of those quick wrap-type slimming salons where they claim you can lose 'six inches in one hour' and things like that... I would add it all up, and it would sound better. Seven and a half inches lost!!

I remember once interviewing a girl who used to work in one of these salons but had left, disillusioned. She said they were taught always to hold the tape measure very loose for the 'before' measurements, and pull tight for the afters, and not make it clear how many different measurements they were adding in to make the grand total.

Just imagine, if I added in what I’ve lost off my arms, my thighs, my calves, my neck, etc etc. And think about it – TWO measurements for the arms, TWO for the thighs... (not that I’ve measured any of those.)

I might have lost a foot altogether, at least!

Oh, I don’t care. I don’t want to delude myself too much. If I’ve lost a bit, that’s good. And I swear, we didn’t pull the tape tight when we measured at the gym.

Update on my dancing marathon: have now conquered all of Viva la Vida and am up to the end of track 4, Single Ladies by Beyonce.

Ate last night: Very tasty beef and noodle dish from BBC Good Food. You coat strips of steak in Chinese Five Spice; finely chop garlic, fresh ginger and fresh chilli; fry all with veggies (I used pakchoi, red pepper, onion but the recipe said baby corn and mangetout), add a bit of soya sauce and fish sauce, lime juice and toasted cashews, and I served with a mix of wholewheat flat noodles and beansprouts.
