September 28, 2011: Can food ever be boring?

By Judith Wills , Wednesday 28 September 2011

Alphabet J Judith Wills was a leading diet guru in the Eighties. Then, at 61, following an injury she “went to pot” and hit 12 stone. She vowed to spend 2011 getting back to shape and Saga is following her diet and exercise plan with her blogs, videos and forum posts. Gosh that's got to have rated as one of the most boring days of my recent life. Yesterday, that is.

Got up 7 am.

Bathed, dressed, cleaned teeth, made 2 cups tea.

Went to office 8 am. Spent all morning writing about diet and cholesterol. Had 2 more cups of tea and a bowl of yogurt and banana.

Lunch. Lentil soup. Getting sick of lentil soup even though I love it.

Back to office. More writing – about the health benefits of a vegetarian diet.

2 more cups tea. Half pot yogurt. Two walnut halves.

More office. Packed up at 6.

Mile on treadmill. Remembered had forgotten to get anything out of the freezer to cook for dinner so we defrosted some ancient Bolognese sauce in the microwave and had it with spaghetti as you do. Haven't had spag bol all year so it should have been an excitement but wasn't. It was boring.

Nothing on TV. Too sick of computer to play games on it. Papers boring.

Bed.

You can see why sometimes people overeat. Boredom is a terrible thing and I guess even a packet of Asda cheese and onion crisps can look amazingly tempting in the circs. But when you get bored like I was yesterday, even food is too boring to be bothered with especially when you've been writing about it all day. Hence the crisps stay in the cupboard, intact.

OK it's only a little hill really, in comparative terms, but it's a mountain to me. Hay Bluff, that is. My friend Glenys and I finally walked up it yesterday. Well, I say walked up it but in fact I puffed and panted and stopped and started and moaned and groaned my way up it. Walking just isn't the word

Glenys and I had to abort our attempt on Hay Bluff which we had planned for Saturday morning as the weather just wasn't good enough. Last thing I want to do is walk up a steep, rocky, muddy incline in low cloud, which, as walkers will know, is exactly the same as thick, impenetrable, freezing fog when you're up a hill
