A guide to returning to driving

Most of us who have passed our driving test, find ourselves driving everyday. It’s a simple necessity. But for some people, for one reason or another, driving can become less of a regular occurrence.

Maybe a move to the city makes a car less of a must-have. Let’s be honest, parking a car in Central London can be a serious headache. Or perhaps you’ve had an accident and driving simply hasn’t been an option for a long period of time.

But life moves on and situations change. So there may come a time when you find that you need to get behind a steering wheel once again. If you haven’t driven for a long while, venturing out onto today’s busy roads can be a very frightening prospect, particularly if you’re an older driver.

Time to take the wheel – again

The reality is, if you’ve passed your driving test, hold a valid licence and car insurance, you can simply get behind the wheel, turn the key and drive off. It might well be legal but is it advisable? In short, no.

If you haven’t driven for a considerable length of time, your driving skills aren’t going to be as good as they used to be. You’ll be out of touch with the ways of the road. Over recent years, the UK’s roads have become very busy places. And driving etiquette hasn’t exactly improved, either. So what’s the best way to get to grips with modern motoring?

Refresher driving courses

Book yourself a refresher course – you’ll find that most driving schools offer them. These courses are specifically designed to boost your confidence and equip you with the necessary skills to drive safely on today’s roads. Plus, the added bonus is that there’s no test to take at the end of your course. So that makes everything a whole lot less stressful.

Once you’ve completed your course, you may still not feel quite up to venturing out in the middle of rush hour, so take your time. Make your first few drives short ones, on quiet roads. You can then tackle busier situations as your confidence builds. You may even find yourself eating up the motorway miles more quickly than you expected!

So if you have been away from the wheel for a long period of time, don’t doubt your abilities, book yourself a refresher course and get back out on the road. You’ll thank yourself for it.
