Being green in the kitchen

The UK still puts around half of its rubbish into landfills compared to some countries like Germany who only bury 1% of their waste. The kitchen is one area that can become more environmentally friendly.

  • Putting a lid on saucepans when boiling can save energy and cook the food quicker
  • When washing up by hand, don’t leave the tap running – fill the sink and wash using that
  • Dishwashers can be more environmentally friendly than washing up by hand
  • Only using your dishwasher when it is full is the most efficient use of energy
  • Fridges, being on 24 hours a day, are a massive drain on energy bills: keep the temperature between 3º and 5ºC
  • Clean the back of your fridge and freezer every so often to remove the dust build-ups
  • Keep your fridge or freezer in a cool place if possible; this uses less energy
  • New fridges have a grading system from A to G (A being the most environmentally friendly)
  • Heating food with a microwave is often less efficient than with an oven.
