Fire Safety

The fire service is called out to around 800,000 calls a year. Fire can happen at any time, but following a few simple guidelines can help reduce the risk to you and your family.

Install a smoke alarm and test it weekly
Get in the habit of keeping doors shut; this can slow the progress of fire
Have an escape route planned and talk about it with your family
Before leaving the house, always check the cooker is switched off
Do not leave candles unattended in a room or close to items that could catch fire
If you feel unsafe, unplug electrical equipment before you go to bed
Turn off decorative lights at night
Make sure all appliances meet the British Standards and are in good working order – be especially careful with electric blankets and portable heaters
Never smoke in bed and make sure all cigarettes are fully extinguished
If you have a fireplace, make sure you use a fire guard and never leave the fire unattended for too long
At Christmas, keep presents and wrapping paper away from open flames.
