Making your household more 'green'

Despite our best intentions, we all sometimes go for the easy option and are not as environmentally friendly as we could be. When one person in a household is trying to make it more green, they have to work on everyone to break bad habits and encourage good ones.

Explain why you're suggesting changes in behaviour. If people understand the benefits of turning appliances off at the wall, they are more likely to do them
Introduce a few changes at a time. Inundating your family with a barrage of requests could seem a bit much
Use humorous post-it notes and signs to remind people to continue their good environmental behaviour
Set up systems for your family to follow easily – having a bin for recycled waste for instance makes it easier for people to recycle
Using rewards to celebrate when your family are living in a more environmentally friendly manner is something everyone can look forward to
