Stairway safety

As we get older the chances of a slip or a trip on the stairs can increase. Following these tips can limit the risk of having a fall on your stairs.

Stairway safety

Keep your stairways and the area around the top of the stairs clutter free
Keep your stairways well lit
Ensure the carpet is well secured and rugs are not likely to cause an accident
If you feel unsteady on the stairs, install handrails on one or both sides – this will assist you when climbing the stairs and help prevent an accidental fall
Use safety gates if children are likely to be present
On outside steps, you could paint the stair edges white so they are more visible
For basements, do the same but just for the bottom step to highlight where floor level is
When moving objects up or down the stairs, don’t overload yourself
