The big clearout

To be successful at clearing out unwanted items, you need to be ruthless. Approaching the task with the mentality that the item ‘may be useful’ in the future will result in you clearing less than a shoe-box worth of items – not a great start to reorganising your home.

  • Understand that by clearing out unwanted things from your house, you will probably create more mess in the short term. Store all your unwanted bits and pieces in one place, until you have the opportunity to dump or donate the items
  • Establish a rough goal of how much you want to get rid of and have a reward planned for when this is achieved. This acts as a motivator and a treat after tidying is always deserved
  • Try selecting a room and de-cluttering it entirely. That way you have a system that allows you to monitor how you are progressing in your clean-up mission – “how is your clean up going?” “Two rooms down, two to go.”
  • Sort your unwanteds into a number of piles – one for the tip, one for charity and one to store in your loft or attic
  • Once you have cleared your items and a little bit of space, remember what you’ve just been through. Try to keep organised so you don’t have to go through that again…at least for another 6 months
