Glossary of Terms
Whilst we have tried to be clear at all times, there are a few key words and phrases that you might not be familiar with. These words and phrases are explained below. If you would like further clarification you can call us on 0800 857 857.
In-patient treatment
Treatment which, for medical reasons, means you have to stay in hospital overnight or for longer.
Day-patient treatment
Treatment which for, medical reasons, means you have to go into a hospital or day-patient unit because you need a period of supervised recovery but do not have to stay overnight.
Out-patient treatment
Treatment given at a hospital, consulting room or out-patient clinic where you do not go in for day-patient treatment or in-patient treatment.
Specialist
A senior medical practitioner who is, or has been, a consultant in an NHS hospital or holds a Certifcate of Higher Specialist Training.
Pre-existing condition
A medical condition which you already have when your policy starts or have had in the recent past.
Specified related condition
The medical conditions that are associated with the following pre-existing conditions: diabetes, raised blood pressure (hypertension) or undergoing monitoring as a result of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test.
No Claim Discount
The discount awarded annually to a policyholder for not making a claim during the previous policy year.
Chronic condition
A disease, illness or injury which has one or more of the following characteristics:
- it needs ongoing or long-term monitoring, through consultations, examinations, check-ups and /or tests
- it needs ongoing or long-term control or relief of symptoms
- it requires your rehabilitation or for you to be specially trained to cope with it
- it continues indefinitely
- it has no known cure
- it comes back or is likely to come back
Clinical practitioner
A dietician, nurse, orthoptist, physiotherapist, psychologist, psychotherapist or speech therapist who we recognise for benefit purposes.
Complementary practitioner
A practitioner in acupuncture, homeopathy, osteopathy and chiropractic treatment.
No Claim Discount Protection
This enables yo to make one claim without affecting your No Claim Discount. Available to a policyholder on our moratorium or full medical history underwriting terms, for an additional premium

Excess
The amount of money you pay towards your claim before any benefit becomes available.
