Glossary of Terms
Whilst we have tried to be clear at all times, there are a few key words and phrases that you might not be familiar with. These words and phrases are explained below. If you would like further clarification you can call us on 0800 857 857.
In–patient treatment
Treatment which, for medical reasons, means you have to stay in hospital overnight or for longer.
Day–patient treatment
Treatment which, for medical reasons, means you have to go into a hospital or day–patient unit because you need a period of supervised recovery but do not have to stay overnight.
Out–patient treatment
Treatment given at a hospital, consulting room or out–patient clinic where you do not go in for day–patient treatment or in-patient treatment.
Specialist
A senior medical practitioner who is, or has been, a consulatant in an NHS hospital or holds a Certifcate of Higher Specialist Training.
Pre–existing condition
A condition which you already have when your policy starts or have had in the recent past.
Related condition
Any condition medically considered to be an underlying cause of, associated to, or directly caused by another condition.
No Claim Discount
The discount awarded annually to a policyholder for not making a claim during the previous policy year.
Chronic condition
A disease, illness or injury which has at least one of the following characteristics:
- it continues indefinitely and has no known cure
- it comes back or is likely to come back
- it is permanent
- you need to be rehabilitated or specially trained to cope with it
- it needs long–term monitoring, consultations, check–ups, examinations or tests
Excess
The amount of money you pay towards your claim before any benefit becomes available.
