“On holiday in Spain in 2011 my wife had an accident. While dancing in the holiday complex she tripped and fell and seriously damaged her hip.
This happened on the second night of our holiday and she was attended by a local doctor and two paramedics from the private Xanit International hospital, who subsequently transferred her there by ambulance.
She was operated on and received a total hip replacement. My first action was to contact Saga, with whom I had taken out holiday insurance when booking the holiday, and inform them of the situation and they quickly gave permission for the operation to go ahead.
During the two weeks my wife spent in hospital following the operation Saga were most helpful, keeping in contact on a regular basis and being appraised of the situation.
My fears about travelling home with an injured partner, who had been confined to bed for two weeks following the operation, were allayed when Saga informed me that they were sending a nurse from the UK to accompany us home.
This was a tremendous relief as both my wife and I are senior citizens and the prospect of travelling alone was somewhat daunting.
The nurse duly arrived the day before our departure and updated himself on the situation. On our departure he organised an ambulance to the airport, wheelchair on arrival and smoothed our way through passport control, immigration and boarding.
During the flight he was most attentive and checked on my wife regularly. On arrival in the UK he had an ambulance waiting to take my wife to hospital where she spent another two weeks before being allowed home.
This was the first time I have ever had to make a claim on holiday insurance and I was very impressed with the professionalism, speed and thoughtfulness displayed by Saga throughout.
