Do I really need travel insurance in European Community Countries?
Yes, the European Health Insurance Card is not a substitute for travel insurance – it is complementary to it. An EHIC does not cover you for all the medical costs that you can incur or for repatriation, lost baggage or cancellations. See our section that explains about the EHIC.
Why must I provide all of my personal and medical details to get a quotation?
At Saga we offer comprehensive cover to suit your needs when travelling. To enable us to do this we require details of your medical health so that we can assess if we can offer insurance to suit your needs.
What kind of policies do you offer?
We offer single and annual multi-trip policies. Single trip policies cover up to 90 days maximum trip duration. Annual multi-trip policies cover any number of trips not exceeding 45 days each as standard (see question below for extensions available) in a 12-month period and up to 120 days total cover per policy year. If accepted our policies cover any pre-existing medical conditions that have been declared. Many insurers will exclude claims arising from or relating to pre-existing medical conditions.
Can I extend my Annual multi–trip policy if I want to stay abroad over 45 days?
We are able to extend up to 90 days if you are travelling anywhere outside the USA, Canada, Mexico or any Caribbean Islands. If travelling to these countries the maximum duration is 45 days.
Are there any age limits?
Policyholders must be aged 50 or over. There is no upper age limit and other travellers added to your policy can be of any age. We offer a discount for partners and any other couple that reside together.
If I add my friends and family who are under 50 to the policy will they be covered under this insurance policy when travelling without me?
Yes, if they are listed on an annual multi-trip policy they can travel independently and still benefit from the same cover as you. This does not apply to single trip policies.
When would you recommend I start my insurance policy?
As soon as you have booked your holiday you should take out suitable travel insurance. In the unfortunate event that you have to cancel your holiday our policy can offer up to £5,000 cancellation cover. Cancellation cover starts from the date you take out the policy, or book the trip. If you have an Annual policy always maintain continuous cover just in case you decide to go on a last minute trip.
Do you cover one–way trips?
No, Saga only covers round trips that start in and return to the United Kingdom.
Do I have to book my holiday through Saga?
No, we can offer cover no matter who you book your holiday with.
Will my travel agent accept a Saga Travel Insurance policy?
Yes, it is not compulsory to take out the insurance offered by travel agents or tour operators and you have the right to shop elsewhere if you so wish. However, they may ask you to prove that you have sufficient cover for the trip in question by asking for your policy number and cover details.
Am I covered for leisure activities and sports?
Our policy covers over 40 different activities as standard. See our policy booklet for a list.
I live outside the UK, can I get travel insurance from Saga?

What is medical screening?
This is a series of questions about your medical health, which determines the cover we can offer you. These questions can be answered over the phone or online. All personal and medical details are held in strict confidence in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
I suffer from a medical condition. Can you provide cover?
At Saga we can cover many medical conditions under our travel insurance policy, we will ask a serious of questions to assess if cover can be offered.
What’s a pre-existing medical condition?
If you have taken any medication, or received treatment for any condition/s by a doctor or at a hospital or nursing home.
I am having medical tests, is this classed as a pre-existing medical condition?
We cannot assess a condition until it has been diagnosed. We would advise that you wait until you have the results from your medical practitioner. Once a condition is diagnosed we can then assess it.
Why does my pre-existing medical condition need covering?
When travelling abroad medical treatment can be very expensive and bills could run in to the thousands if comprehensive cover is not taken out before you leave.
Why can’t you exclude my pre-existing medical condition like other companies do?
At Saga we aim to provide comprehensive cover for all of our customers. If we excluded your medical condition and you became ill whilst abroad as a result of your condition, the policy would not cover any medical emergency or treatment costs or be able to assist with any repatriation requirements. All bills would have to be funded by you and these can become very expensive in overseas hospitals and clinics. The British Consulate or Foreign & Commonwealth Office is unable to help with medical costs if you are unable to pay yourself.
Will I need a medical certificate to take out insurance?
No, we do not ask for a certificate as long as your doctor has confirmed with you that you are fit to travel. We will rely on you answering the medical questions accurately. We will not cover claims for any existing medical conditions, which you have not told us about.
What should I do if I develop a medical condition once I have bought my policy but have not travelled yet?
If you develop a medical condition once you have taken out our policy you should notify us immediately to enable us to tell you if we can continue with cover. Any conditions that arise before you go on holiday that are not declared may invalidate you policy.
What is Saga Travel Assistant?
Saga Travel Assistant is a helpline service that helps you sort out all kinds of travel problems before you go and while you are away, from information on the country you are visiting to advice and guidance on how to replace lost or stolen passports, luggage, travel documents.
What happens if I change my mind once I have bought a Saga policy?
You can cancel your policy with a full refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you aren’t going to make a claim. No right to cancel exists where all cover will have ended in a period of less than one month from the date of commencement.
