Security matters
- Monitor the media and check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Travel Advice Service for the place(s) you plan to visit. Call 0845 850 2829 or visit the website at www.fco.gov.uk/travel. The Travel Advice Service describes what the FCO believes to be the general nature of security issues, drawing on assessments that are made and regularly updated by British embassies overseas.
- British travellers arriving in the United States are now fingerprinted and digitally photographed. This can result in longer queues at US airports, but travellers’ safety should be enhanced.
- Look out for anything suspicious (for example, an unattended bag at an airport or a group of people acting suspiciously). Report anything that you think is suspicious to the local police – many terrorist attacks have been foiled due to the vigilance of ordinary people.
