Alphabet L Lindsey Bareham recommends vegetables that may help eyesight

Q: I was brought up to believe carrots help you see in the dark but can you recommend other foods that will help my deteriorating eyesight?

A: Experimental opthalmologist Prof. Ian Grierson at Liverpool University says diet can make a difference. And, yes, carrots are good because of the high carotene content - as are veg rich in the antioxidant vitamins C, E and A. Lutein-rich chard, which I love, is top of the leafy greens list. His books Veg (and Fruit) for Vision are packed with tips and recipes. They are available from the Macular Disease Society.

This information was first published in the September 2008 edition of Saga Magazine.
