New year, new love life

By Saga correspondent , Wednesday 11 January 2012

Alphabet T The New Year is a traditional time in which to try and give our lives something akin to a spring clean, with resolutions being made (and usually broken soon after) left, right and centre

After the excesses of the festive period, the cold, crisp weather that January brings can be an invigorating catalyst in reminding us of some positive changes that we want to make.

Given the emphasis on family and friends over Christmas and the short period between then and Valentine’s Day in February, it’s not surprising that this has become a great time to meet someone via online dating. Many sites see new memberships rise by up to 40% over this time compared to the rest of the year, ensuring a surge in activity with users eager to start messaging each other and arranging dates.

Online dating itself has come a long way in the last decade and has successfully shed the difficult and random stigma associated with its older brother, the era of classified adverts. In this age of social networking, millions of singles, especially in the senior age bracket, are now acquainting themselves with online dating. More presciently, it’s now also accepted as a great way to expand your social circle.

Although there is no ultimate guarantee in finding someone, a practical approach to online dating is to see it as a stepping stone towards not only finding out what you like, but also to enjoy yourself before committing to something more permanent. Coming out of a long marriage/relationship or having been single for sometime, many people are often tentative about putting themselves “back on the market” in the very public glare of a dating site. However, all good sites are committed to user security and safety and a good dose of common sense will ensure that you avoid some of the pitfalls associated with it.

Joanna, 62, hasn’t found someone yet but still recommends it. “I’ve had a great time talking to and meeting new people, which did wonders for my confidence. Although I’ve not met someone I’m happy to be with yet, I’ve made some good friends.”

Toby at Saga Connections commented “The New Year is a great time to get involved with online dating because we not only see a big upsurge of new members trying the site for the first time, but everyone is very committed to making as much of their time on the site as possible. Even if you don’t find that special person, it can be an excellent method of restoring your confidence in both yourself and making new friends. Our advice is to really enjoy the time you take in getting to know new people and don’t rush into anything more serious until you feel comfortable with it.”
