Writing a profile description can feel like a tricky task as, apart from when it comes to CVs, we just aren’t used to selling ourselves. It can be tempting to paint a picture of yourself with very broad strokes, to avoid seeming too quirky or idiosyncratic, and to try to appeal to as many people as possible. Whilst it’s important that your description doesn’t make you seem narrow-minded, it can be easy to stray so far into the middle of the road that it makes you appear a touch boring.
‘Be yourself’ is a maxim that has been much overused, but it really does apply when it comes to online dating. The more detail about you, your hobbies, your likes and dislikes that you put in your profile, the more there is to interest the person reading it. Do a bit of research before you write your description; have a look through the site and read other people’s descriptions of themselves. You’ll probably find that the more in-depth a narrative is, the more it grabs your attention, so don’t be afraid to do the same yourself.
Make sure that you’re being specific about your passions and interests. If you’re a registered breeder of Siberian huskies, get it in your description, don’t simply write ‘animal lover’ and say nothing else about it. If you own a vintage Aston Martin and like to spend your weekends zooming around country lanes with the wind in your hair, put it in your description as ‘classic car enthusiast’ doesn’t quite cut it. Think about the image that you’re creating for yourself as you write; zipping around in an open-topped car has a lot more romantic appeal than ‘enthusiast’. Potential dates will be much more likely to respond to these specific details as they’ll be able to get a fuller picture of who you are, and it works in your favour too as you’re much more likely to be contacted by people who share your interests.
Specific details also give people something to talk to you about. Writing first messages can be hard, especially if a profile hasn’t given you much to go on. If you can pique someone’s interest with a detailed description they’ll jump into contacting you rather than worrying about what to write. The bottom line is that the dates lie in the details – the more you put in, the more you’ll get out.
