Dynamic Steel

A fun, slightly strange item made of a length of steel that springs into life and creates spirals, this torus spring is bound to be a fun toy on Christmas day and also makes a great desk toy for older grandchildren – just the thing if you are worried about buying something a grandchild will soon outgrow, particularly if you have a grandchild with an interest in science. Available from Hawkins Bazaar, priced £10.

Razor Sole Skate

The Razor Sole Skate is a great little skateboard that is not much bigger than a shoe. It can be stashed away in a backpack and brought out when needed, making it very portable. Currently half price at £9.99 on Toys R Us.

Minecraft action figures

Minecraft Diamond Steve Chances are, if you have a grandson aged between 12 and 14 he is likely to be one of the 100 million people playing Minecraft, a game that allows users to create worlds from scratch.

A range of action figures are available with an RRP of £9.59, although they are available online for around £6.99. Minecraft 3” Steve is the main character in the range but, if you aren’t sure whether your grandchild already has Steve, you can also get a set of three mini figures including a pig, a creeper and a skeleton – some of the inhabitants that live in the world of Minecraft. Toys R Us stock a good range.

Remote controlled quadcopter

Quadcopters come in a range of styles and sizes. The larger ones can carry cameras for aerial photography, but can come at quite a price. Hubsan offers a wide range of different quadcopters for very reasonable prices – the H107C includes a fitted 2MP camera and comes in at around £55. If you can’t stretch to that, the H107L is available for around £30 and provides an excellent miniature entry-level alternative. Available from Amazon.

Build your Own Robot Arm

If you want to give a bright older child a challenge then the Build your Own Robot Arm is a great way of introducing them to machinery. Once built it can also be controlled remotely. Available from Amazon for around £33.
