Age discrimination bill: promotion and training
Employers and colleges will no longer be able to set upper age limits for training, unless they can show there is a real need for a limit. Older workers will also have a right to promotion While at work, employees are protected from harassment because of their age. Comments such as "you're over the hill" or "wet behind the ears" may constitute harassment.
"If the comment is 'unwanted' and its purpose or effect is to violate someone's dignity or create an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment, then it will constitute harassment," says Clive Howard.
"This could include the making of derogatory comments about a person’s age or excluding/ignoring a person on the basis of their age.
It may not necessarily be targeted at one individual or individuals but could be an office culture of telling and tolerating ageist jokes." Written by Rachel Carlyle
