Mature learners: the Open University student
When Peter Jenkins walked into an Open University open evening ten years ago, he never dreamt where his first inquiry would lead him
He now has a first class BSc (Hons) degree, a Masters in Engineering and a new role with QinetiQ - one of the world’s leading defence technology and security companies – overseeing their surveillance radars. “Although I had a HNC, by the time I reached my mid forties I felt that I needed to up-grade my qualifications”, says Peter, now aged 55. “The OU was great for me because I was able to continue my studies wherever I was working in the world. “It wasn’t always plain sailing; I remember a particularly low time completing an assignment in the Singapore airport transit lounge at 4am. “But, without a doubt, my OU qualifications helped me to secure my current role with QinetiQ.” Peter, from New Quay, Cardiganshire, has now embarked on a BA degree with the Open University and is currently studying the French language. The only rest he has planned this year is a holiday in France – to practise his French. Written by Felicity Hawkins
