The heritage volunteers
Mary & Peter Egginton, in their 70s, from Birmingham are heritage volunteers"We started volunteering at Back To Backs, a carefully restored 19th-century courtyard - Birmingham's last surviving court of back-to-back housing, when they reopened a couple of years ago.
“We belonged to the National Trust and read about volunteering in their newsletter but we already knew about the Back To Backs project and were interested in it. "Peter did a guiding course so he could take tours around, but I couldn’t manage going up and down all the stairs so I volunteer on their enquiry line.
“We both volunteer at Back To Backs together and we go there every other Saturday. "Through volunteering, we are able to keep in touch with people, especially young people, although it does make you feel a bit aged sometimes! We hope we will be able to carry on for as long as possible.”
Our thanks to The 'V' Word , which aims to challenge perceptions of ageing and promote volunteering to people over 55.
