The hospital volunteer
Bill Jones, 55, from Liverpool is a volunteer at a hospital
"I was a warehouse stock keeper until 1993, when I became ill with cancer. I couldn’t work and needed something to do so I went to the Volunteer Centre in Liverpool, which suggested the Aintree Hospital Volunteers.
"I work two days a week at the hospital. On Mondays I work for the Patient Advice Service where I let people know where the service is and what it does.
“On Wednesdays I work in the hospital volunteers’ office doing clerical support like helping with the production of all the patients’ information leaflets.
“I lost my hearing due to chemotherapy and had to have my right leg amputated – I was suffering from stress and depression but volunteering helped alleviate all of that.
“Volunteering gave me a sense of purpose and well being again.”
Our thanks to The 'V' Word, which aims to challenge perceptions of ageing and promote volunteering to people over 55. Written by Sally Williams
