Can we replace our conservatory roof?

Chartered surveyor John Conlin’s advice on replacing a conservatory roof.

Question

We have seen adverts for conservatory roof replacement. Our conservatory frame and roof are plastic. Is it likely to safely carry the weight of a solid roof?

Answer

Plastic frame strengths vary widely and some contain steel inserts. The load bearing capacity needs to be checked against the weight of the proposed roof.

Do not rely on a bland reassurance from the roof supplier or a guarantee that relates to the roof alone. Choose a company that offers an insurance backed guarantee against problems in the entire conservatory attributable to the new roof.
