Can we stop birds accessing the chimney?

Chartered surveyor John Conlin advises a reader on how to stop birds coming down the chimney.

Question

Three birds have come down our chimneys. Two into an open hearth and flew around making an awful mess. 

The third came down to the Aga, fortunately off at the time, but we had to get the bottom section of the flue pipe disconnected to get the bird out. 

What is the best way of avoid a repeat?

Answer

Where a flue is or may be used, cage the chimney pot with stainless steel or galvanised mesh. Using ‘chicken wire’ is a false economy as it may only last three years. 

Where the chimney pot is not likely to be used a terracotta ventilated cap, called a ‘spiggot hood’ is ideal keeping both birds and rain out whilst allowing vital ventilation.
