How can we stop the floors creaking?

Advice from chartered surveyor John Conlin could stop your creaky floors.

Question

Our floors upstairs creak badly walking on them .We have covered them with hardboard but it has not made much difference. Any suggestions?

Answer

You have not mentioned whether the floors are of traditional boards or modern chipboard type panels.

The hardboard is really too flexible on its own. If it is boards that creak identify the troublesome ones and screw them to the joists; the trick is to use countersunk screw cups that stop the screw head ‘eating’ away at the surrounding board as it flexes under foot pressure, which allows the board to become loose again.

For chipboard, cover with plywood bonded to the chipboard with PVA adhesive.
