Living in sin at 60: Jan Parr and Micky Hiscock

In deepest Wiltshire, retired antiques dealer Jan Parr, 63, has few family responsibilities to consider, but not the least intention to marry the former gamekeeper with whom she (together with three ferrets, one dog, a polecat and a singing canary) shares her cottage

The profoundly un-Mellors-like Micky Hiscock, 72, met his Lady Chatterley at the 2002 Countryside March and they quickly established a shared interest in small ferocious animals and car-boot sales.

A colourful and proudly eccentric woman, Jan, who is divorced, spent many years as a valuer for a London auction house, specialising in pre-1830 paintings and Chinese porcelain, before opening her own antiques shop in Sussex.

Micky has been a soldier, under-keeper on a great estate, head-keeper and finally a gardener.

“Marriage is not an issue,” says Jan. It is companionship, certainly for her, that brought this unlikely pair together rather than grand passion.

Jan and Micky are clearly fond of each other but they will remain contented cohabitees. “We're two lonely people keeping each other company. To hear someone gently snoring beside you, that's enough. What's the point of changing things?”
