Find a new relationship: get some moral support
Relate counsellor Denise Knowles, says she understands why it may be hard for single people to make that first step of getting out: “Often it's the fear of having to go to a club, night class or social event on your own,”
“Many older people are very much young at heart and want to be active and socialise. But they feel embarrassed going out on their own. And trying to meet a prospective partner is especially difficult if they've been out of the dating game for a while. They feel as if they are totally out of touch with dating etiquette.”
Knowles suggests enlisting the help of a friend, colleague or relative to act as friendly support in a social situation. Having someone with you at a function allows you to observe others and subtly pick up the mood of the event before getting stuck in yourself.
“No matter what age you are, socialising on your own is not as easy as mingling with someone you already know,” says Knowles.
Ask your local council for details of activities and courses in your area. Local places of worship often also offer a lively social scene.
