Over-60s divorce boom

The only age group to show a rise in the divorce rate last year was the over-60s, the Office for National Statistics announced on August 31, 2006.

The divorce rate in England and Wales fell by eight per cent overall last year to its lowest level since 2000, but there was an increase of two per cent in the number of women aged 60 and over divorcing.

In 2005, 8086 husbands and 4671 wives over 60 petitioned for divorce – (each gender’s figures are listed separately as each party may fall into a different age band).

That is an astounding rise from, for instance 1991. Then, just 5,454 husbands and 3,199 wives over 60 divorced. Today’s figures reveal a rise of 48 per cent on those figures.

Overall, there were 141,750 divorces in 2005 in England and Wales, compared with 153,399 in 2004 – the lowest number of divorces since 2000, and the first annual decrease since 1999/2000. This is 14 per cent lower than the highest number of divorces which peaked in 1993 (180,018).
