You only get one chance to make a first impression and – like it or not – what you wear has a huge impact on what a new match thinks about you. Here are six ideas to help you dress for success on that all-important first date.

1. Wear what makes you feel comfortable

When you’re wearing something you’ve already been told looks good on you, you feel extra comfortable and therefore a lot more confident. You’ll interact with your date in a more attractive way and carry yourself far better if you’re feeling good about how you look, so keep that in mind when choosing your outfit.

2. Don’t worry about being ‘trendy’

Research suggests that men are not likely to notice labels or trends when going for a first date (or perhaps any date!) with a woman, but he will most definitely notice some basic styling. Women in turn appreciate nice shoes. Be your own brand and tell your own story with what you wear. Your date is dating you, not a designer label.

3. Dress appropriately for the occasion and location

If you know you’re going for a walk in a park, leave the high heels or suede loafers at home. Nothing is more of a turn-off than someone who’s more worried about their clothes than what their date is saying. Think about where you’re going and when, and dress appropriately. You can still show off your best assets (like your personality) no matter what you wear or where you go – but comfort is key.

4. Choose clothes that flatter

Perhaps you have one item – like a shirt or pair of jeans – that you know flatters your body. It highlights your best assets and helps disguise others you’re not so keen on – which always helps to give your confidence a boost. Similarly, if a certain colour makes your eyes sparkle, try and work it into your outfit even if just in your accessories. First dates are for good impressions.

5. Go easy on perfumes and colognes

A nice smell can leave a great first impression and some colognes and perfumes can work wonders to make us appear more attractive. But keep in mind that too much of any scent is off-putting. The last thing you want is to smell stronger than the amazing Italian food you’re eating. If in doubt, less is more.

6. Ensure your clothes are well presented

This goes without saying. First dates are not for tatty T-shirts, crumpled trousers or jackets in need of repair. You’ll make a much better impression with just a little preparation. Get the iron out the night before and make sure every item is stain-free.
