Cookery technology tips

More tips to assist you when combining the art of technology and the art of cooking

Cookery widgets

If, like the rest of us, you can’t get enough of Yahoo Widgets – the tiny applications that sit on the Desktop and offer any one of a range of handy features – you’ll love these two food and drink-related tools.

Verbot Bartender works with Windows only, so download the Yahoo Widget Engine for Windows first from widgets.yahoo.com/download and follow the onscreen installation instructions.

Download the Verbot widget from widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=
39118
and get lists of ingredients and assembly instructions for just about any cocktail you care to mention.

Best bets for recipe cards

To transfer recipes from the computer to the kitchen, by far the easiest option is to print them out. For frequently used recipes, it might even be a good idea to have print-outs laminated so they don’t get damaged when lying on a work surface. You can do this at your local printing store.

With a notebook computer sitting next to the cooker and a wireless home network, it’s possible to browse recipes directly from the web or access saved recipes on a wirelessly connected computer. Alternatively, email a recipe to a smartphone or handheld computer for use in the kitchen.

Eating phenomena

One of the great things about joining the online gastronomic community is that it lets you learn about global food, cooking and traditions. No one outside the US knew what a Turducken was until last Thanksgiving. If this passed you by, let us enlighten you: it’s a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken – all boned, of course. Many regional butchers in the UK will prepare one for you as a Christmas speciality but you might get some funny looks if you ask for it by its American name.

For a food-related chuckle, visit Pimp That Snack www.pimpthatsnack.com, which offers insight into the cult of the super-snack. The giant Krispy Kreme doughnut is impressive.
