Blogging sites

Why not try your hand at keeping an online diary with a choice of blogging sites?

www.blogger.com

Blogger is one of the best-known blogging sites and it’s now owned by Google, which means its users have access to some of Google’s impressive tools. It’s easy to use and free to set up, which means a putative Pepys could have his or her site up and running in minutes. As with all these sites, little technical knowledge is needed.

www.typepad.com

TypePad is a slightly flashier, more streamlined cousin to Blogger. It’s a paid-for service but in exchange, users get access to some more advanced features. However, it’s still easy to use, and very little technical knowledge is required. A free trial is available for anyone who wants to put the service through its paces.

www.wordpress.org

WordPress describes itself as a ‘semantic personal publishing platform’ but we think that means the same thing as ‘blog’. It’s a bit more focused on design, allowing users full rein when customising the look and feel of their sites. However, it requires you to set it up on your web space. It’s free to set up and use.
