The best websites for maps

Fascinated by those amazing online maps? Well, Google's Maps website can now be tweaked by other websites to include lots of useful information

www.googlemapsmania.blogspot.com

Truly amazing stuff: this is a list of Google Maps sites, known as 'mash-ups' because they mash the map and another source of data to create something new. There are lists of maps by country, including some showing the real positions of trains and planes, as well as maps documenting restaurants, shops, current events and even the position of the international space station.

www.ononemap.com

Recently revamped, this useful website displays properties for sale or rent, as well as properties that have recently been sold. It also displays their prices. In addition it can show local scholls and supermarkets on the same map, so it's easy to see how close a house or flat is to either of those amenties before you make the move.

www.housepricemaps.co.uk

Housepricemaps shows the prices of houses and flats that have been sold in the past few years. The information on the site comes from public data from the Land Registry, but this makes it much easier to use. Unlike Ononemap, it doesn't show properties for sale, but it's useful for reference or even if you're just feeling a bit nosy.

www.bikely.com

Cycling is not only good for you and the environment, but is becoming ever more popular, particularly in car-choked cities. Here is a chance to share your cycle route with others. Bikely helps cyclists share their knowledge of good routes with one another. Anyone can submit a map just by clicking a Google map, which is included on the site. As with all these websites, it is free to use. It is not necessary to sign up to view the maps.
