Share and edit photos online

Now you can store and share your pictures online, and remove unwanted blemishes from them too, for free

Here are a few simple tips on how to use the Flickr website, an excellent way of organising those treasured photos of your family and friends. Another internet service, Picknik, will help you remove common photography problems such as under or over-exposure and red-eye from photos:

Step 1
Go to www.flickr.com, and click on Create New Account. You’ll be taken to a page asking for your Yahoo ID and password. If you don’t already have a Yahoo account, click on the Sign Up link and follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 2
Return to Flickr, click on Create New Account, and enter your details. On the next web page, click on Create a new account.

Step 3
Click on ‘Upload your first photo’, then on the Browse button next to the first box. This will open the Choose File dialog box, with the My Pictures folder open by default. Alternatively, click in the Look in box, and locate the relevant folder. Click on the picture you want to display, and then on Open.

Step 4
You can upload up to six photos at a time. Enter tags for all the photos here, or wait until the next screen to apply tags to individual images. A tag is a label used to find photos. For example, say your picture is a class photo from Elmwood primary school, taken in 1953. The tags might be: class 1953 “Elmwood Primary”. Quotation marks put two words together. Anyone searching for Elmwood Primary or 1953 will find your photo. Fill in the rest of the page and click on Upload.

Step 5
When you’re happy with the names, descriptions and tags for each photo, click Save.

Step 6
If you’ve restricted the viewing of photos to family and friends, you’ll need to get them to sign up to Yahoo and Flickr too. Click on Contacts at the top of the screen and then on ‘Invite a Friend to join’. Once they’ve signed up, add them to your Friends and Family lists. Enter their Flickr name in the box on the Contacts page and click on Search. Next, move the cursor over the icon next to the contact’s name, click on the down-pointing arrow that appears, and select Add as a contact.

Step 7
To edit photos you have stored on Flickr, or on your computer, go to www.picnik.com. Click on Get Started Now, then on the Flickr button (sign on to Flickr first) or Upload Photo if your pictures are on your hard disk.

Step 8
Select a photo, then click on the little button underneath the image, to the right, and choose Edit from the menu that appears. The editing tools are accessed by clicking on the relevant button at the top of the screen. In the bottom, right-hand corner is the Zoom tool. Use this to enlarge the image for making adjustments to small areas, such as red-eye removal.
