A gadget gran’s top tech gifts

15 December 2016

Online retailer Amazon.co.uk asked some of the UK’s everyday experts to help their customers find the perfect gifts for friends and family.

With Christmas Day fast approaching, online retailer Amazon.co.uk searched the country to find some of the UK’s top everyday experts to help their customers find the perfect gifts for friends and family.

This included teaming up with tech-savvy seventy-two-year-old grandmother, Toni Fine, who reviewed this season’s gifts to create the Approved by Customers tech wishlist of 2016.

Toni, along with her son Jeremy and grandson Louis, family put the most sought after gifts through their paces, with their findings captured on film for the Amazon.co.uk Christmas Gift Guide. The result is a definitive list of some of the best presents this festive season, including the Amazon Echo, HUBSAN H107 Quadcopter, and Fire TV Stick, amongst others.

"I have loved tech and gadgets for many, many years so when I got the chance to be involved and review some of the best products in the world, I jumped at the chance," said Toni.

Kindle Paperwhite

It has an amazing battery life which is useful for travellers, but the thing I love most is that you can read in bright sunlight, which must surely be a great bonus for Saga travellers.

It’s very simple, does what it is supposed to do, is lightweight and robust, and would make a fabulous Christmas present for a grandparent who quite possibly had the earlier Kindle readers which were much heavier and no good in sunlight.

I think perhaps more mature readers can get stingy with themselves and are reluctant to go for a newer version, believing that what they have already is good enough – but trust me, once they try the Kindle Paperwhite they won’t want to put it down!

Fire TV stick

I'm sure many mature readers do not change their television sets for newer, bigger, faster, as so many of their children and grandchildren do. And that works fine for them... until they want to watch something like BBC iPlayer – older televisions simply don’t have the capability to stream programmes in the way modern televisions do so easily.

But that’s where the Fire TV Stick comes in. It enables older television sets to access programmes that come as standard on new televisions but not on the older ones.  All that’s required is a USB port on the television.

It’s really good value and very easy to set up as it only requires adding it to the local network; if they can't do it, a neighbour or child can. It only needs doing once. Additionally, it can be moved from one room to another and comes with a very light, small remote.

The Echo

Amazon Echo can do very complicated things if one invests in additional plugs and compatible devices but it can also work on the very simplest level which I find very useful; if I wake in the middle of the night, I could say “Alexa, what time is it?” without having to turn a light on. I could then say “Alexa, turn on Radio Four,” in the hope that listening to the soothing sounds of the radio would help me drift back to sleep. What a shame it can’t fetch me a glass of water – perhaps that feature will be in the next update…!

A word from a Christmas gift expert

“Since the launch of Amazon.co.uk, the product reviews and ratings by customers, for customers, have become instrumental in helping us all decide what to buy from the hundreds of thousands of gadgets available,” said Natalie Awdry, Amazon's Christmas Gift Guide Manager.

“This year, we’ve found Toni and her family to help others find the right gifts this Christmas. Bringing customer reviews to life with their honest feedback, the Fine family want to make sure everyone experiences the perfect 'What’s under the tree?' moment on Christmas morning.”
