National Trust

This app lets you find NT places near you and all the relevant details such as opening times (there’s a similar app for the National Trust for Scotland). You can even set up calendar alerts for events you don’t want to miss. Free, iOS, Android

Audible

Before a long train journey you should check out the vast number (more than 80,000) of audiobooks available to buy on Audible’s app. 

From bestsellers to the classics, they are all here. Useful tools include bookmarking, chapter navigation and the ability to vary the narration speed. Free, iOS, Android

BBC Weather

Detailed 48-hour forecasts, location-specific information as well as UV and pollen alerts, plus you can log and store favourite locations. Free, iOS, Android

TripIt

Whether you're a holiday planner or spontaneous type, TripIt helps turn your travel and booking confirmation emails into a day-by-day itinerary. 

TripIt also suggests attractions and activities according to your plan, and even looks up all the information we seem to forget like weather updates, local maps and directions. Free, iOS, Android

Foodspotting

Before you end up eating a sub-standard meal tourist trap, make sure you download the Foodspotting app to find good eats and authentic dishes available in restaurants all around the world. 

With this app you can try a specific dish that the region is famed for and users can browse the app's selections alphabetically, by category, rank and even neighbourhood location. Free, iOS, Android
