How to set up an email account on your iPad

Simple guide to getting started with email on an iPad.

If you spend more time on your iPad than your computer, it can be much more convenient to use your tablet to manage your emails.

Setting up an email account on your iPad is straightforward: you can either go for a completely new account or have your existing email running on your iPad.

You will still be able send and receive emails from your home computer – and all messages will be stored on both devices regardless of where they were written or originally received.

Seven cool things you can do with your iPad.

Using an existing email account on your iPad

If you already have an email address that you want to use on your iPad, go to the 'Settings' menu and then choose 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'. Now tap on 'Add Account'.

You will then be shown a list of major email providers, such as Google (which runs Gmail), Yahoo!, AOL and Outlook. If your provider is listed, just tap on its name and then enter your account information, ie, your address and password.

If you can’t see it on the list, tap on 'Other' at the bottom and then select 'Add Mail Account'.

In the box that pops up, type in your name, email address and password, as well as a description of the account (eg, home email address).

On the next screen, you should generally make sure that the IMAP tab (not the POP tab) is highlighted with a blue background. Next, fill in some more information about your incoming and outgoing mail server: your email provider will be able to give you these details.

Managing your email

Once your account is successfully set up, go back to your 'Home' screen and select the 'Mail' icon. This will take you to your account’s inbox and download your current email.

If you have already replied to any emails in your inbox from your computer, this will be indicated: any email actions you carry out on your iPad will be noted on your computer and vice-versa.

Four ways to speed up your iPad.

Getting a new email account

As part of its iCloud back-up service, Apple offers free iCloud.com email accounts. To set up and use one of these, go to 'Settings' and then choose 'iCloud' and type in your Apple ID details, if necessary.

In the list on the right, you’ll see an option marked 'Mail': slide the button from left to right to turn it on and then follow the instructions to choose an email address and set up your new account.

Equally, you can set up a new web-based email account with the likes of Gmail or Yahoo! just for use on the iPad: if you do this, just follow the instructions above.
