How to rent a holiday cottage

Jenai Laignel ( 20 February 2015 )

Renting a cottage is the perfect way to spend a week with friends or family and, once you've all chipped in, can be seriously cheap. But where to start? Here's our brief guide.

When to book?

Many cottage rental companies suggest you book early. The best cottages tend to get snapped up over Bank Holiday weekends and school holidays, so do your homework and book during the quieter times.

Where to book?

Some of the most sought-after areas include Cornwall, Scotland, Devon, Wales, Norfolk, the Lake District and Dorset.

Within these regions, of course, there are particular magnets – for example, Padstow in Cornwall is very popular in the summer months.

If you do find that cottages in these hot spots have already been taken, there are many lesser-known areas in other parts of the country that are equally as picturesque.

What type of cottage to book?

The type of cottage you choose will, of course, depend on your requirements.

How many are there within your group? Do you want a swimming pool? Do you want to look for holiday cottages with a sea view?

If you want a luxury property, you may want to consider opting for a boutique cottage, which come with a range of extras.

What to pack?

Holiday cottages will be fitted with everything you may need – that's why they're considered a 'home from home'. Most come with an ample supply of bath and beach towels which should save room in your suitcase.

For the ultimate week away, you could even arrange for a case of wine to be delivered to your holiday cottage. It needn't be expensive either. Take a look at Saga's exclusive discounts with Laithwaites Wineyou can save over £50 and you'll receive A FREE bottle of Chapel Hill The Prophet Shiraz 2014 (normally £22)!
