Pension age changes unfair to women

Between 2010 and 2020, women’s pension age will increase by six years, a change that was not mentioned before the election. The proposed increase to the state pension age to 66 by 2020 will have unfair and disproportionate consequences for a significant number of women.

We’d like your signatures in support of those who will be adversely affected by the Government’s sudden proposed changes to women’s state pension age.

Women accept the need to equalise pension ages but the timetable proposed seems wholly unfair. Half a million women already over age 55 will see their pension age rise by over a year – on top of increases of three or four years set out in the 1995 Pensions Act. These women are already 56 or older and many have carefully planned their finances in the expectation that they would receive their state pension sooner. By suddenly making them wait longer, many will face a shortfall of more than £10,000 each and most will not have time to make good their financial losses.

The Government needs to raise money but this is not the correct approach. Saga’s recent survey showed 74% of over 50s believe this timetable is not right. Saga would like to see these proposals amended so women are not unfairly treated. Please sign below if you agree.
