* If you’re upgrading your mobile phone, consider selling your old one via one of the phone recycling websites such as Envirofone, Fonebank, and Mazuma or via high street names including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Boots and the Royal Mail. Some, including Asda, will also offer money for other digital gadgets such as MP3 players, digital cameras, PSPs, sat navs, and the Nintendo DS as long as they are in a reasonable condition.

Alternatively give the phone or other gadget to your favourite charity so they can recycle it and get the cash.

*  Looking for cheap days out? The daysoutuk.com website has suggestions for places to visit, with vouchers giving money off various attractions. You can currently get two tickets for the price of one for Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Nash’s House and New Place, Hall’s Croft and Mary Arden’s Farm (closed for winter, but re-opens March 19, 2012).

A ticket for all houses costs £19.50, with concessions priced at £17.50, and children £12. A ticket without the farm costs £15.50, concessions £14 and children £11. Under 5s go free. All tickets allow unlimited entry to the houses for 12 months from the date of purchase.

* The budget hotel chain Travelodge has launched another sale of rooms costing less than £20 a night between April 1 to August 31, 2012 (excluding London during the Olympics between July 27 and August 12, 2012).

Rooms start at £10, and others are available at £15 and £19 compared with a normal charge of between £29 and £75. All 480 Travelodges are taking part in the sale but the sale has already started and rooms go quickly so don’t delay in booking.

Saga meanwhile has teamed up with Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn for some great short break hotel deals. And with Warner Leisure Hotels, adults can take advantage of 7 nights for the price of 5, and 5 nights for the price of 4.

* The Chocolate Trading Company - The Chocolate Trading Company www.chocolatetradingco.com is offering a £3.50 discount when you spend £35 or more. The company offers special gift boxes including luxury chocolate truffles, selection boxes and champagne. You can either send a free gift message or choose a greetings card to go with your gift. Order by 4pm on March 16 for Mother's Day delivery and enter the promotional code FEB35 to get your discount.

* Tesco Direct, the online arm of the giant supermarket, is having a clearance sale. Top offers include 10 per cent off all cookers, fridges and freezers, 50% off furniture, beds, bedding and lighting a Tecknika 32" HD ready TV for just £199 and a Kindle electronic reader complete with case for just £98.97. You can buy online from www.tesco.com and collect the item from one of 750 stores or have it delivered although there may be a charge for this.

I read with interest the article regarding the lady who was to inherit £60.000 approx. from her sister. I too have quite a bit in savings and wish to leave as much as possible to my 2 grown up and married sons. I also have 3 grandchilren. If I give money to my sons and grandchildren now, will I be penalised when and if I need care. I am 70yrs of age with a lot of medical problems.

Merely an everday method of saving money. I go to the supermarket and instead of buying a jar of coffee, taking it home, and pouring into a coffee tin, I buy a refill pack of coffee and use that instead. It is a lot cheaper. Also, when making a cup of coffee, it is pointless filling the kettle, just put enough water in it that is needed for one cup
