It is has been proved that you are more likely to have an accident just walking along the pavement than you are doing something 'dangerous' like flying in a plane**. In fact, figures from Saga Personal Accident Insurance* show that huge numbers of accidents take place in the home during everyday activities such as DIY, which alone is the cause of 250,000 accidents every year. Alarmingly there is a sharp increase in DIY-related injuries at Easter, the traditional start of the home improvements season.
It's just as important to be careful outdoors with 400,000 accidents occurring in gardens annually, mainly through people falling over. Even a harmless looking flower pot is the cause of 5,000 injuries. In addition to this, 220,000 people are injured on pavements and over 250,000 people are injured in road accidents every year.
Michael Cutbill, Marketing Director, Saga, commented: "Accidents can and do happen anywhere, including our own homes. No one wants to dwell on worst case scenarios but it can be reassuring to know that you can get financial support following an accidental injury."
Saga's free guide to accident prevention includes hints and tips on safety in the home, in the garden, on the streets, on the roads and what to do in the event of an accident.
Saga Personal Accident Insurance is available to people aged 50 and over.
