Press release

Car theft in Scotland amongst the lowest in UK

Monday 15 August 2005

  • Cars are 36% less likely to be stolen than rest of UK
  • Scots overall make 14% fewer claims than national average

Research from Saga Motor Insurance today reveals the regional differences between motor insurance claims in the UK.* The news for Scottish motorists is very good, cars are over a third less likely to be stolen and just under a third less likely to be broken into than the UK average.

The data suggests either that there are fewer opportunist thieves in the country or that the Scots are very clued up when it comes to security. Any cars that are stolen cost considerably less to replace than the national average, indicating that it is older cars with lower levels of built in security that are getting stolen in the region.

Scotland's motorists generally seem to more careful behind the wheel as they are 11% less likely to have an accident than the UK average. In fact, overall, they are 14% less likely to make any sort of claim at all, making Scotland the third safest area of the UK to drive in, behind Wales and the North East.
