Present & incorrect
- Over 60% of over 50s receive the same kind of Christmas gifts every year
- 37% have re-wrapped and given the gift to someone-else
The eyes of Britain's over 50s are more likely to glaze over than light up at the sight of their Christmas presents, according to new research by Saga Home Insurance*. Over 60 per cent say they receive "the same kind of gifts every year" - mainly candles, slippers and socks and two-thirds confess they have to "feign delight" when opening their presents.
Nearly 9 out of 10 (85 per cent) of over 50s questioned say they enjoy hobbies or special interests and 78 per cent claim they would rather receive inexpensive presents relevant to their interest than the default gifts they are given. For almost a third of over 50s, their favourite way to recycle unwanted gifts is to donate them as raffle prizes, and 20 per cent admit they have sold stuff on at a car boot sale. You could even find something familiar in your stocking next year as 37 per cent have re-wrapped a gift and given it to someone else as a birthday or Christmas gift.
Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive, Saga, comments: "Many of today's over 50s are seeking out a more active and challenging lifestyle, but younger members of the family are slow to catch on. Regardless of their age, everyone appreciates a present which is personal to them and their interests. Why not try Salsa lessons instead of slippers, for example?"
Men are more likely to receive the same sort of presents every year (71 per cent) compared to women (57 per cent) and over a quarter of respondents think sending a 'Dear Santa' list to younger relatives, letting them know what they want, could help.
