Spirit of the 1960's for the over 50s
- Over 50s swap VWs for caravans and hit the open road
- White van man and school run mums annoy caravanning freedom seekers
Britain's over 50s are re-living the carefree days of the 1960s, swapping their VWs for caravans and hitting the open road on a weekly basis, according to Saga Caravan Insurance and caravansitefinder.co.uk*. However, caravanners are not immune to the stresses of other road users as 'white van drivers' and 'school run mums' hamper their quest for freedom.
The majority of Britain's over 50s caravanners (87%) say they pursue their nomadic holiday hobby because they enjoy the freedom. One in four do so because they enjoy the community feel of campsites and a quarter say they caravan because it is a low cost holiday.
Many Caravanners are in dire need of the peace and quiet of the campsite after contending with other road users en route. Almost half of all caravan owners find 'white van drivers' the most annoying road users, followed by the modern phenomenon of 'school run mums' that annoy one in three.
On the whole caravan owners are a spontaneous bunch, with a third saying that they decide to pitch their caravan whenever they are ready to stop driving, whereas just one in ten pitch at the same site every time. Interestingly age is not a factor in determining how often people use their caravan during the summer months, around three quarters of caravanners take to the road once a month or more during this period.
The majority of caravanners choose to holiday in the UK (70%) but over 50s are more likely to venture further afield than their younger counterparts - 10% of over 50s caravanners will regularly travel to France compared to just 2% of under 50s.
Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive, Saga, comments: "Caravanning is a great way for over 50s to take to the open road and have total freedom over their holiday arrangements. Our experience shows us that caravanners enjoy being spontaneous so we offer fully flexible caravan insurance to suit them. For example, with our Silver cover level, it is up to the caravanner if they want to include European cover."
Saga offers caravan insurance from as little as 52.50 per year** and there is an additional discount if you buy online.
