Saga Holidays joins forces with the National Trust
Saga Holidays and The National Trust have joined forces to create an exclusive range of National Trust themed cruises and other specially selected cruises and escorted tours specifically designed to appeal to National Trust supporters and to help to raise funds for the charity.
Now, every time a Saga Holidays customer chooses a National Trust cruise or tour, they will also be doing their bit to support the Trust's vital environmental conservation work. A percentage of the cost of every holiday will be paid by Saga to support the Trust's general conservation work while a contribution of 10 per person will be included in the cost of the National Trust exclusive cruises and tours. The money raised will go directly to a Trust moorland restoration scheme in the Peak District that is designed to help protect this fragile peatland landscape and to stem the effects of climate change by sustaining the moorland's role as a natural carbon store.
The cruises offered have been selected for their appeal to Trust members and supporters, their quality and value for money and for the majority, the ease of leaving from and returning to UK ports.
New on the market are two cruises for 2008 on board the 350 – passenger ship, Spirit of Adventure, which have been exclusively designed with the National Trust in mind.
Trust members and supporters who join the Celtic Legends cruise in June 2008 will not only have the chance to visit some of the great Trust houses and gardens in Northern Ireland, to sail into some of the lesser known ports of Western Ireland but at the same time, in a series of on board lectures, learn about the intrigue, history and modern day management of a great National Trust estate – Cotehele in Cornwall.
In August 2008, through a collaboration with the Trust's Waddesdon Manor, world famous for its renowned collection of Rothschild wines, members and supporters can visit some of the best vineyards of France and the Iberian Peninsula. The cruise will celebrate some of the great wines and specialist foods of Europe, with a series of on board tastings led by Ben Howkins, personal wine adviser to Lord Rothschild and lectures by food historian and author, Sarah Edington.
11 June 2008 – Bristol – Portsmouth
The focus of this 7 night cruise is on the great houses and gardens of Ireland whilst passengers are also given a behind the scenes view of the history and present day conservation of a great English estate. Rachel Hunt, the House and Collections Manager at Cotehele will be on board to uncover tales of heroism, romance and intrigue associated with this great Cornish house . Other features include a walking trip of Dublin's Georgian quarter, a chance to see the Giant's Causeway and a visit to the Abbey Gardens in Tresco in the Scilly Isles. Prices start from 917*, including a selection of excursions, insurance and gratuities on board.
The Vineyards of France and Iberia:
7 August 2008 – Harwich – Barcelona
This very special 14-night cruise gives unique opportunities to sail right into the wine producing heartlands of France. The Spirit of Adventure will visit Rouen, Nantes on the Loire and Bordeaux on the Gironde. Plenty of time on board to learn more about wine and to taste some of the special wines produced by the Rothschild vineyards. With a visit to Oporto also included, passengers will have the chance to spend time at some of the port houses and to talk to on board lecturer, Ben Howkins, personal wine adviser to Lord Rothschild and author of 'Rich, Rare and Red: A guide to Port.' Foodies will be intrigued by presentations by writer and food historian Sarah Edington – food and wine matching, tales of the Captain's table on some of the great cruise liners, stories from behind the green baize door – will all feature. Prices start from 1884*, including a selection of excursions, insurance and gratuities on board.
In addition to these fabulous ocean cruises, Saga Holidays and The National Trust are putting together several river cruises and special National Trust escorted tours to European destinations such as Croatia, Norway and Italy, which will be on sale later in the year.
